Lorine Niedecker . . . . Still!

I gave my 25th Lorine Niedecker talk in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, on April 2, 2013 at the Geneva Lake Museum. What a great group, the best I think I’ve ever talked to (the Ozaukee County League of Women Voters was terrific too) because they talked BACK at me, taking everything I said about Lorine and running with it.

As for SUMMERS: A TRUE LOVE STORY people keep telling me they love it, can’t put it down once they start reading.  (I wouldn’t know that by the sales . . . . . ). Available from Xlibris and on Amazon.com.

Currently I’m going through Lorine’s personal library, housed in the Niedecker Room at the Dwight Foster Public Library in Fort Atkinson, updating the list of her books with correct bibliographical entries for each. Does this sound dull? Far from it. Few things can bring you closer to a person no longer living than handling her books, reading her jotting in margins, finding clippings stuck between pages, knowing Lorine has held these books, turning pages, absorbed.

I’m also at work writing a childhood memoir that I’m calling EXORCISING EMMA. Emma was my grandmother, whose house I was born and raised in. If you’ve read SUMMERS you have an idea what my grandmother was like. I’m doing it first because I’m a writer, so have to write, and second as catharsis because I’ve never been able to come to terms with the influence of Emma on my life. I read in a book on exorcism that the exorcist suffers acutely during the process. The book is right. Wish me luck.

Also writing an article about Bernard Shaw and actors and actresses for a collection of essays about Shaw to be published by Cambridge University Press. Returning to a familiar subject: my BERNARD SHAW AND THE ACTRESSES was published by Doubleday in 1980. Must find something new to say.

And spring seems to be coming to Lake Mills at long last, which means lots of muddy paws for Katie the Collie but also green things pushing out of the ground.
